Spetses sailing vacations
Spetses is a very nice little island where you get the choice of just relaxing, going out at night and visiting some interesting sites.
It is small enough to get around by bike in 4 or 5 hours and there are very few cars.
After 2am there is a ban on driving mopeds, but even until then it is quiet here.
The people here are very friendly, even though the island has been visited by holidaymakers for many years.
A lot of Athenians also have summer houses here since it is quite close to the capital.
The island capital is built on the gentle slopes above the wide bay containing its harbour.
The present town, with a number of mansions and three interesting churches in Kastelli, the upper town, dates from the 19th century.
There is also a local museum. The circuit of the island of 12 km is a pleasant day walk, or it can be done in a horse-drawn carriage.
Spetses Island is located close to Athens and just opposite the coasts of Peloponnese.
Only 2 hours by hydrofoil from Athens, Spetses island is a popular weekend destination and a nice place to relax.
The impressive thing is that cars are not allowed in the main town and transport is done by bicycle, motorbike and horse carriages.
Spetses island gives a relaxing atmosphere to visitors.
The architecture is traditional and the streets are narrow and paved. Many buildings are Venetian and depict a wealthy past.
In the Medieval times, the locals had made a fortune from sailing and sea trading.
When the Greek War of Independence started, the people of Spetses island were ready to contribute with money, guns and war ships.
In fact, one of the most famous contributors and heroine of the Greek Revolution was Laskarina Bouboulina, whose house has now been converted into a museum.
Most beaches on Spetses island are accessible by bicycle, by bus or boat.
These include Vrellos, Agia Marina, Agioi Anargyroi and lots of smaller calm coves where you can enjoy some privacy.
There are also a few coves within walking distance from the main town.
Around the town, there are many monasteries connected to each other by hiking trails.
The scenery of Spetses island is lush green and beautiful.
