Nissyros sailing vacations
Nissyros is a quiet paradise.
The island has a 3 kilometers to 4 kilometers wide caldera and was constructed within the past 150 000 years, with 3 separate eruptive stages.
When many island resorts are being over run by tourists, traffic and commerce, Nissyros remains as an unspoiled haven of peace and tranquility.
Nissyros possesses the clear water beauty of the Aegean sea coupled with a small village atmosphere.
There are no busy intersections only small coastal and mountain roads.
All year round it offers spectacular vistas. Nissyros is the place to come when you seek peace, tranquility and rejuvenation.
According to the Mythology, the god Neptune, helping Zeus while he was combating the Titans, he was pursuing the terrible giant Polyvotis on the beachside and in the seas.
Arriving in front of the island of Kos he detached with his trident a part of the island, he launched it against Polyvotis and he buried him underneath.
The island of Nissyros is created by this fragmentary part of the island of Kos.
The volcano was created in the place where the mouth of Polyvotis is whereas the periodical earth vibrations are also due to the continuous
laboured breathing of the buried Titan chest.
Nissyros is one of the Dodecanese islands locared between Kos and Tilos.
Nestling among the hills in the northwest of the island lies the main town and port of Nissyros, Mandraki.
The town of Mandraki is where the majority of the population lives and is a busy little town, with whitewashed houses, as well as quite a few traditional nataural stone houses.
The center of the town boasts a charming square where locals and tourists sit in the evenings to enjoy the culinary delights in the many tavernas.
Travelling east from Mandraki are the spa springs of Loutra which still operate today.
Apart from Mandraki, the rest of the tiny population of Nissyros tend to live in the quaint fishing village of Palli, where good tavernas and accommodation can be found.
The residents of the island frequently organize trips and events for young people, the elderly and visitors to the island.
Nissyros is not known for its buzzing nightlife but for picturesque taverns, traditional coffee shops and bars which create a pleasant atmosphere for visitors.
Nissyros is ideal for purchasing traditional products such as the local drink Soumada made from almonds, honey, preserved baby tomatoes and capers.
Hand-made embroidery is also to be found here.
