Leros sailing vacations
Leros island is one of the 12 main Dodecanese islands, located between Patmos and Kalymnos in the South east part of the Aegean sea.
Its surface is about 54 square kilometers with a length of 15 km and a least width of 1,5 km.
Its coast line is about 46 kilometers and that makes the island a lace of small bays and capes ideal for swimming, diving and fishing.
Leros has two main ports, Lakki in the south west part of the island and Agia Marina in the middle.
The gulfs of Alinda, Panteli, Vromolithos, Gurna, Plefuti and Xirokambos are ideal for water sports
and swimming as well with the smaller beaches of Merkies, Panagies and Koulouki.
The island is surrounded by many smaller islands ideal for daily tours like Archangellos, Marathi, Aspronisia, Tiganakia, Agia Kyriaki and Pigianousa.
The highest mountain of Leros is Kleidi over the gulf of Alinda.
Other mountains of Leros are Apitiki where the Castle of Panagia situated over Panteli, Tsigounas,
Diapori and Skoumbarda in the South part of the island and Merovigli over Spilia and Platanos.
Leros has many springs of fresh water. The geographical shape of the island has given to Leros many beautiful bays and beaches.
Leros capital city is Platanos that in recent years has been connected with Agia Marina in the north and Panteli to the south.
Krithoni and Alinta are a few km away from Agia Marina and they are the most popular tourist resorts with many hotels.
Panteli is the picturesque fishing village of the island with a well organised beach,
fishing boats and several taverns and cafes as well as several rooms and self catering accommodations.
Vromolithos located next to Panteli has a good beach and some hotels and apartments.
Another resort on the island is Xerokampos to the south, with a nice beach, from here you can go to Kalymnos by boat.
Gourna to the west side of the island has a huge sandy beach.
The areas of the north, where is the airport of Leros, inclde Partheni and Plefouti with a beautiful beach with pebbles and trees for shade.
Leros has an Airport which connects daily the island with Athens the Capital city of Greece.
Leros island has also daily connections by ferry boats and hydrofoils to Piraeus and most of the Greek islands of Dodecanese like Patmos,
Kalymnos, Lipsi, Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Symi and Nisyros.
Leros is the island of the Goddess of hunting Diana.
Leros is a Green island in contrast with the most of the Dodecanese or Cyclades that most of there islands are rocky and dry.
You can see obvious the difference as the ferry boat enters the gulf of Laki or if you are coming with the Hydrofoil from Kalymnos to Leros how the nature changes
while approaching Leros having a panoramic view at the bays of Vromolithos and Panteli and then entering the port of Agia Marina at the bay of Alinda.
Many of the buildings on the island are built in Italian style, but you can also find those typically Greek little white houses with blue doors and windows.
The people on the island live off agriculture, some work in the island hospitals and in the summer, tourism is another source of income.
Because Leros has a very large natural port, many sailing boats and luxury yachts arrive here in the summer, giving the island an international and cosmopolitan flare.
Leros has Marinas in Lakki and Partheni, both with capacities for hundreds of yachts.
In Panteli and Vromolithos there many yachts mooring for the night or for a couple of days.
The island takes part in the Aegean regatta every summer.
In Lakki there is a sailing school while in Xerokampos there is a diving school.
