Folegandros island
Folegandros is a little off the main tourist flows.
Right from arrival, tourists are impressed by the cliffs of the island
The Chora of Folegandros with its Venetian fortress, its narrow streets, beautiful places and
the impressive cliffs is probably for many people the main reason to come to Folegandros.
In the Chora there are cozy taverns with delicious food.
Folegandros has nice beaches, but you need to walk a bit or you can rent a boat.
Two beaches can be reached by car. These are Karavostasi and Angali the last being one of the nicest beach.
In Karavostasi you find a long stoney beach, one beach East of the port and small beaches towards Livadi.
From Ano Meria you may walk from 40 to 90 minutes to reach other beaches, among which Agios Georgios, on the North East.
Walking this island is a joy as its perfumes and its silence are really unique.
In springtime and early summer the island is rich with caper flowers, thyme and oregano.
Folegandros is one of those little quiet islands where time seems to have stopped.
It is the very prototype for the typical Greek island, with clear waters, white houses and little winding streets.
It is located in the southern part of the Cyclades near the islands of Milos and Sikinos.
The island has an area of 32 square kilometers and a population of 558.
It is more a large dry rock in the middle of the sea rather than a proper island where potable water and land suitable for cultivation are rare.
The people living there have as a major source of income the high income tourism as the island is a place of recollection and reflection for many famous people.
Although Folegandros has little in the way of tourist amenities or roads, it attracts more and more visitors each year,
mostly those in search of solitude close to nature and away from the spirit of other cosmopolitan islands such as Santorini, Rhodes, Mykonos or Corfu.
A steep and rocky island, Folegandros is a challenging place for those who want to explore its nature.
It is definitely worth walking here and the harsh nature and the many views will give you something to remember.
Folegandros is an excellent place for snorkelling, fishing and just relaxing.
Some people like taking walks in the steep nature and others even go jogging.
There are usually boat excursions around the island.
