Athens sailing vacations

Sailing can be really enjoyable with good weather conditions, which are easy to encounter in Athens, especially during the summer.

The city of Athens took its name in the antiquity after Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and daughter of Zeus. She was the protector of the city.

Athens is built around the Acropolis and the pinnacled crag of Mt Lycabettus, which the goddess Athena was siad to have dropped from the heavens as a bulwark to defend the city.

Athens has currently over four million inhabitants. The suburbs have covered the barren plain in all directions and the city is packed with lively taverns and bustling shops.

Dominating the Athenian landscape, the Acropolis is unsurpassed in its beauty, architectural splendor and historic importance.

The entrance to the Acropolis is the Propylea designed by Mnesycles and constitutes an original architectural composition of great importance,

which extends 150 feet adjoining the temple of Athena Nike or Wingless Victory.

It has been the official capital of the country since 1834 and is also the only city of Europe with such an oriental touch.

Athens is considered as the cradle of modern civilisation and is of course one of the few capitals of Europe with a history of thousands of years.

In Athens, you can charter luxury sailing or motor yachts with a skipper; modern or traditionally styled motor boats for groups; flotilla and bareboat yachts.

Most ports and marinas around Athens offer convenient boat and docking facilities and services.

There are many excellent sailing schools and charter service companies in Piraeus and along the coastal highway to Glyfada.

Athens is situated in the prefecture of Attica and extends to the peninsula that reaches up to Central Greece.

It is surrounded by mountains Ymmytos, Pendeli and Parnitha, northwards and eastwards and the Saronic gulf southwards and westwards.

The sun is shining over Athens all year round. The climate is one of the best in Europe, with mild winters and very hot summers, ideal for tourism.

It is located just a few kilometers from the port of Piraeus, the central commercial port of the capital and the shores of southern Attica.

Athens area offers several beaches:

Vouliagmeni is a beautiful and picturesque peninsula, situated on the eastern edge of Athens

Varkiza or Alianthos is a beautiful suburb of Athens with a sandy beach on the way to Sounion.

AGIA MARINA is a small beach between Varkiza and Lagonissi.

Palea Fokea or Palaia Phokea next to Anavissos is a nice sandy beach southeast of Athens. A beautiful fishing port adds to the beach charm.
