Amorgos island

Amorgos is a fairly mountainous island of the Cyclades and invites more for walking than for swimming, although there are beautiful beaches.

Amorgos was in the 90 famous from the movie The Big Blue, which was played partly on the island.

There are two seaports on Amorgos, Aigialis and Katapola, from which Katapola is the much more attractive.

In Katapola there are a lot more restaurants, bistros and accommodations. Another advantage is that most ferries arrive here.

Amorgos is an island with white houses, crystal clear water and a peaceful atmosphere.

It is one of the the easternmost islands of the Cyclades, located southeast of Naxos, Ios northeast of Ios and north of Anafi.

The coastline is 112 kilometres.

In recent years, the beauties of Amorgos are attracting more and more Greeks and foreign tourists.

There are several beaches along the coast line, such as:

Megali Glyfada is a sheltered bay on the northern part of Amorgos, one hour walk from Tholaria village. The beach is big and sandy.

Mikri Glyfada is a small bay north west of Tholaria village. It has a fantastic beach, with parts of sand and pebbles.

It can be reached in half hour walk from Tholaria, through a rocky path, used by locals to go fishing.

Psili Ammos is another sandy beach in Aegialis, reached by walk, or by small boat which leaves during the summer season from Aegiali port.

Levrossos is one of the nicest beaches of Amorgos in Aegialis area.

It is unofficially a nudist beach, accessible in 20 minute walk from Aegiali village, or by regular boat crossings also during the summer season.

Nikouria is a small uninhabited island in front of Aegialis Bay, famous for its coin production in antiquity and later used as a refuge for lepers.

Today, visitors enjoy its beautiful sandy beaches while a beach bar is also available to refresh and feed the visitors.

There are regular crossings during the summer by small boat. It is ideal location for snorkelling and octopus fishing.

Agios Pavlos is an area on the northern part of Amorgos, just before Aegiali, with a pebble beach, right across from Nikouria island.

It is also a fishing spot, with very calm waters.

Agia Anna is a famous beach of Amorgos, located right below the Byzantine Monastery of Chozoviotissa. Here the waters are clean and crystal clear.

Halara is a different beautiful swimming place, full of flat rocky banks, and gravel beach, one hour walk from Potamos village in Aegiali.

Maltezi is a sandy beach near Katapola port. At this beach there are sun chairs and umbrellas for rental as well as a beach bar.

Agios Panteleimon is a sandy beach at the left side of Katapola port entrance, reached mainly by boat crossings in the summer.

The beach is named after the little church located above.

Katapola is a sandy sandy, located just in the middle of the Katapola port with trees that provide shade to its guests part of the day,

as well as a variety of restaurants, snack-bars, cafes at the nearby area.

Finikies is a picturesque sandy beach, on the left side of the exit of the port of Katapola. It is accessible by car, boat or by taking the path by foot.

Agii Saranta is a beautiful sandy beach, outside the port of Katapola, on the left side.

Perivolas is a sandy beach, on the south part of Amorgos, across from the small rocky island Petalidi.

Kato Kambos is a picturesque small gulf, with sandy and rocky beach and a small chapel right by the water.

It is in walking distance from the village of Kolofana.

Mouros is a very popular pebble beach, near the small villages of Arkesini and Kamari.

There are two caves in the water at the right hand side as you walk down to the beach, where people can swim in.

Just above the beach there is also a snack-bar that one can cool down his thirst or hunger.

Paradissia Beach is located below the beautiful church of Agia Paraskevi, where the big festival of the 26th July takes place in Kolofana.

It is a small sandy beach where the remains of an early Christian basilica has been splashed by the waves for centuries.
